About 48 Nigerians were on Wednesday deported back to Nigeria by the United Kingdom (UK) authorities in a fell swoop over allegations of immigration related crimes and offences.
According to information from a source, close to the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the deportees were brought into the country through the Lagos airport at 8.03 a.m.
The deportees were flown into the Lagos airport aboard a chartered Boeing 767 aircraft with registration number AWC931, which took off from London Stansted Airport. They were accompanied by security officials from UK to prevent the deportees from becoming violent on board.
On arrival, they were made to pass through required immigration processes through the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) area of the international airport.
Among those deported were 44 young men and four women.
It was gathered that the deportees were accused of violating immigration related offences ranging from expired travel documents and other immigration offences.
When Nigerian Tribune visited the Lagos airport, only few of the deportees were seen around as most of them had left. Some of them were said to have contacted their friends and relations on phone to pick them up while others arranged for car hires to take them to their various destinations.
One of the deportees, who spoke anonymously, declared that he has a dual citizenship of Nigeria and Netherland and that he was picked up on his way to the studio.
