One Direction, Nicki Minaj and the Weeknd emerged as the night's big winners Sunday during the 2015 American Music Awards.
The English-Irish boy band summoned screaming fans when it nabbed the awards for artist of the year and favorite pop rock duo or group. Minaj also swept her category, winning both favorite rap/hip-hop artist and favorite rap/hip-hop album for "The Pinkprint." The Weeknd followed suit with favorite male soul/R&B artist and favorite album in the same category for "Beauty Behind the Madness."
Hearts, however, were won by Jared Leto and Celine Dion's heartfelt tribute to Paris in wake of the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks there. Leto introduced Dion by saying that despite everything, peace is possible and by urging viewers to consider the plight of refugees. Dion sang a moving version of famed French singer Edith Piaf's lament "Hymne a l'Amour."
The ceremony kicked off with a soulful performance by Jennifer Lopez, followed by Prince presenting the first win to the Weeknd.
The show heated up around an hour in when Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth shared a re-creation of the long kiss that made news as an out-take from their "Marvin Gaye" video. Favorite male country artist winner Luke Bryan commented that the "smooch" kept rolling after the commercial break started.
The evening culminated with a very wet performance by Justin Bieber, who danced in a downpour while singing his hit song "Sorry."
Pop & Hiss has marked all the winners in bold, below.
