The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Barr Hassan Bello, has lamented Poor Standards of Freight Forwarding Practice in Nigeria, even as he has challenged Freight Forwarders and Customs agents to adopt professional practice in order to promote efficient Service delivery in Nigerian ports.

Bello stated this in Apapa today during his welcome address to Customs agents and Freight Forwarders at a one day training workshop organised for agents by the Nigerian Shippers Council in collaboration with Council for the Regulation of Freight Forwarding in Nigeria (CRFFN) and VESTRACKER.

He underscored the relevance of Freight Forwarding in the socio-economic development of Nigeria. But lamented that the Profession has become an all comers affairs, a development that has adversely affected Standard Practice of the Profession.

"The Freight Forwarding practitioners in Nigeria, like in other countries of the world are at the heart and centre of our international Practice, working for importers, exporters and other relevant stakeholders to ensure that goods are securely freighted from origin, properly cleared from the ports and safely delivered to the destination.

"In spite of the immense contribution of Freight Forwarding to the socio-economic development of Nigeria, the standards of practice has been poorly rated. This is because the Profession has become all comers which is inimical to smooth and efficient clearance of goods at the Nigerian ports.

"Freight Forwarders must be well exposed to standards of practice in Freight Forwarding Profession for them to operate effectively in the ports, thereby minimizing unethical practices and promoting efficient service delivery in our ports", Bello stated.

The workshop whose theme is "Filling the Professional Gap in ICT Driven Freight Forwarding Profession in Nigeria" had notable Freight Forwarders and Customs agents in attendance.
