WORKERS in the oil and gas sector of the economy has warned that they will resist plan by the management of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to sack 1,100 of its workforce.

President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Igwe Achese, urged NNPC management to tread with caution and jettison plans to sack 1,100 workers.

Labour said the move negates the cardinal policy of President Muhammadu Buhari administration, which is job creation and not job losses. Achese said the union could not watch and see its members who have served for years to be thrown into the unemployment market because of government’s inconsistent policies.

He said NNPC workers are the best as they have continued to keep the oil and gas sector moving even when they have to work with obsolete equipment and indecent work environment. The NUPENG boss stated that the workforce should not be used as guinea pigs but commended.
