Platforms Communications, Publishers of Platform Reporters Online and Producers of the popular Maritime Platform weekly Radio Programme is organising a Maritime Students and Youth Conference tagged A DAY WITH NIGERIAN MARITIME STUDENTS.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday after a meeting of the Planning Committee held in Lagos on Monday, the Convener of the Conference and CEO, Platforms Communications, Mr Sylvanus Obasi said the event which is the first of its kind in the maritime sector would hold on a Children’s Day, 27th May 2016 at Ace-Olivia Hall, Lagos City Mall, Onikan - Lagos by 9.00 am prompt.
According to him, "As a media outfit with special interest in maritime coverage and reportage, through our media investigations and interactions with various stakeholders in the maritime industry, particularly students of various Maritime Academies and Institutions in the country, we have observed a need to convene a Conference of all maritime students in Nigeria, where these young maritime professionals can gather to share ideas, learn from the older professionals and prepare themselves for the challenges of the future".
"And seeing that there is no such event in the sector presently, we hope to make this novel idea an annual occasion for this maritime students and youth". Speaking further, Obasi said the event aims to achieve the following:
I. Provide a suitable avenue for Nigerian maritime youth/students to converge, interact and network amongst themselves .
II. Avail these students/youth the opportunity to meet and learn from seasoned practitioners in the sector and providing a platform for information sharing and cross-fertilization of ideas between the young and older professionals.
III. Enable government, private companies and industry players to understand the challenges of these students, with a view to helping them overcome them.
IV. Acquaint the students/youth with the tenets of President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war as evidenced in the maritime industry to rekindle hope and build up trust and integrity in the industry.
V. Above all, expose these students/youth to the enormous potentials in the maritime sector and how to tap into it.
He also revealed that the event whose theme is, "The Youth And The Future Of Nigerian Maritime Sector", would be chaired by Engr Greg Ogbeifun, CEO of Starz Group, whereas the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi would deliver a Keynote Address.
Other speakers for the event include: Hon Dr Chris Asoluka, Former Chairman, Oil and Gas Free Zone Authority, Olisah Agbakoba (SAN), Principal Partner, Olisah Agbakoba Legal, Otunba Kunle Folarin, Chairman of Nigeria Ports Consultative Council, Mr Muyiwa Afolabi, CEO, Frontiers International Services Ltd, and other captains of Maritime industry.
The event is meant for all Nigerian Maritime students, all young maritime practitioners and youth, graduates and alumni of various maritime schools in Nigeria, maritime stakeholders, as well as every Nigerian youth who is interested in making a Career in the maritime sector. Over 1000 Maritime students and youth are expected to attend the occasion.
