Rugby is a very exciting, physical and lucrative sport many able bodied Nigerian youth would like to get involved in, but because of poor management, poor publicity and maybe inexperienced leadership Rugby has been at its infancy for many years in Nigeria.  A survey carried out at strategic locations in the country showed that only 15% of Nigerians know about the game of rugby.  The question now is which way forward Nigerian rugby?

The just concluded rugby tournament held in Morocco just a few weeks back, Nigeria came second but very few people in Nigeria knew anything like that took place. Is it not incredible that players who brought glory to Nigeria were not given anything as bonus, both during and after the tournament.

According to a source, this not the first time our ambassadors are treated shabbily when they go to flag the country’s flag international tournaments.    It has being going on for years now. Another question is what motivation we you giving to these players that put in their all in the colors of Nigeria, most of them cannot make rugby their full time occupation because they have family at home to take care of, they have to get involved in other jobs to support themselves.

So we are using this medium to appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria, Nigerian Rugby Federation and private sector to help the game of Rugby get to the position it belongs in the sporting world and also pay players what is due to them because Rugby can be a professional sport in Nigeria.  So let all the stakeholders involved wake up to their duties.
